Geometry with marshmallows and toothpicks

After reviewing and learning a few new shapes, I passed out toothpicks and marshmallows to each student. They had to make some of the shapes (square, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon, and octagon). Then I gave directions such as; a shape with 1 triangle, 1 square, 4 right angles, 1 acute angle.... They should be able to show you a right angle, acute angle, obtuse angle, and say how many sides each of the above shapes have. Then I gave them experiment time and they came up with a lot!

Sequencing to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich

After me giving them step by step oral directions ending with the whole class standing in "tree pose", they wrote their own directions on how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I choose 5 students randomly to read their directions and 5 students to follow their directions, ending in 5- 1/2 sandwiches :)

Spring Photos

On Monday, spring pictures were sent home (if they were here when they were taken). Any that you do not want to purchase need to be RETURNED ASAP to school. We as a class are responsible for any that do not get returned ($42 for each whole package). You do have the option of only buying a few sheets at about $12 each. The money needs to be returned as well as any un-bought pictures. Thank you

Measurement Homes

A few in the hallway

First, we started with a piece of graph paper. There, they designed their house and any extras they wanted (barn, tree, people...), to ratio (if they used 1 square on the graph paper, that was 1 inch with construction paper). On their final construction paper house, they had to label the height and width in inches.

Spring Break homework

Today (Monday the 8th) I sent home report cards and homework packets with most of the students. They should all be sent home by tomorrow, Tuesday. There are math and reading AIMS samples and multplication flash cards. The sample tests are to be worked at together and double checked. There are more practice problems in the back of the math state issued version-- all problems should be worked out. If you have questions, you can e-mail me. This is all due (just reading and math turned in) Monday, March 22nd when we return.

THANK YOU for your help and participation, this is beneficial to them :)

Just interesting to see where in the world there is sunlight/ night time (and helps when you try to figure out the countries and continents in the light and shade)

Tuesday's field trip

We went to Desert Devils and the fitness sports agility place next door on Tuesday. We learned about the muscles we use, nutrition, and safety during activity. They all tried something new, from watching Jett and Jager skateboard to trying an obstacle course, trampolines, bars, and sliding down the half pipe! Here are some pictures from the day (not many and a little blurry- I was stationed at the obstacle course :) )
