End of the year

Tomorrow morning (Wednesday) channel 5 will be here at 9am. Academy of Arizona, a charter school in Phoenix, was broken into this last weekend and had $10,000 of equipment damaged and stolen. Tomorrow morning we will have a special assembly to present $350 that Mr. Z's class has earned from the school store with the news here. They also all made cards to give to the principal of the school. My favorite quote from a card in our class was, "I am sorry the STAFF in your school was robbed" (I asked if all the teachers were gone now!)

Also tomorrow we will have the read a thon around the world- they can bring A blanket/ pillow (not their bed!) a book they like and a special snack. In the afternoon we will move the desks so they can get comfortable on the floor and read- keeping track of how many pages they read to equal miles on a map...

Friday is an early release day (12:30)and most of left over work will be sent home then.
I think this is all now...have a good rest of the week!

This next week: May 17-21st

On Monday I will be sending home a"R is for Recipe" page. My hope is that you will take some time to look for an easy "Kid friendly" recipe that the student likes to write it out. When they return the recipe, they will type it up on this blog. Then, throughout the summer when you want to try something new to make together- get on here and look up a new recipe! Participation is requested, but not counted like homework.

FYI- there will also be a yellow parent survey going home on Monday that needs to be returned asap.

Starting early/ mid week I will introduce our:

End of the year showcase:

Choose 3 of the options to be completed by Wednesday, May 26th

Read a chapter book, more than 100 pages long, write out a book report that is in depth. Full sentences, correct spelling and grammar, using all details from the story.

3. Are you confident in your multiplication facts? Prove it by going in front of the class and answering 25 random multiplication problems out loud within 5 seconds.

4. Pass the math packet with 85% correct (you must answer on your own, but can have help at home). This will cover most everything we worked on this year.

5. Label and color, carefully in the lines, a world map and United States map. Complete the geography questions.

6. Look up more in depth a social studies topic we have learned about this year (Vikings, Canada, Pilgrims and Mayflower, Rome…) and write 2 paragraphs of new information with a picture to share with the class.

this is still a work in progress, but I wanted something for them to work for at home and school- that correlated a little of everything we worked on this year. This will be the last week for a spelling packet (last spelling test will be this Friday the 21st) and probably the last for math homework. I want them to read and work on these projects instead for next week.

Let me know if you have questions!

Week April 19-24 (Sat= Family Appreciation Day!)

Monday the 19th: AIMS #3 (the LAST part!) I hope they are all getting lots of sleep tonight, breakfast will be served, cereal, tomorrow morning at school.

Thursday the 22nd: This is also Earth Day! I will be doing a demonstration on Wednesday in school about what happens when oil (vegetable oil) spills into a river (Tupperware bowl of water) and how hard it is to clean up. We will be going on our field trip to the Arizona Science Center, we have 4 parents going but should have 1-2 more. Let me know ASAP if you are interested. It is $8 for parent/ family helpers. We will be gone all day, 8-2. Please make sure the students are at school ON TIME!

All week:
we started a science experiment with an egg in vinegar. It is called The Naked Egg.
From the website this is what is happening:
Let's start with the bubbles you saw forming on the shell. The bubbles are carbon dioxide gas. Vinegar is an acid called acetic acid - CH3COOH - and white vinegar from the grocery store is usually about 5% solution. Egg shells are made up of calcium carbonate. The vinegar reacts with the calcium carbonate by breaking the chemical into its calcium and carbonate parts (in simplest terms). The calcium part (free ions of calcium float around in the solution) while the carbonate part reacts to form the bubbles that you see. I wanted to use this to teach the class about the Scientific process (question, hypothesis, materials, collect data, test, draw conclusion...) so they all wrote their hypothesis. I wanted to show them that they need to have a test egg as a steady factor. I started worrying however that as they were talking about doing this at home- the plain egg in water would go bad. I kept ours in the fridge... They are excited to watch what happens even if the water egg is not a good representation of a real experiment.

Saturday the 24th: Meet at Red Mountain Park for a BBQ and games. Bring the whole family and friends!

Geometry with marshmallows and toothpicks

After reviewing and learning a few new shapes, I passed out toothpicks and marshmallows to each student. They had to make some of the shapes (square, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon, and octagon). Then I gave directions such as; a shape with 1 triangle, 1 square, 4 right angles, 1 acute angle.... They should be able to show you a right angle, acute angle, obtuse angle, and say how many sides each of the above shapes have. Then I gave them experiment time and they came up with a lot!
